Champions League 2024-25: Slot Praises Alisson as Star Goalkeeper Helps Liverpool Defeat Girona Alisson Becker delivered a stellar performance on his return from injury, helping Liverpool secure a win over Girona in the Champions League on Tuesday. Manager Arne Slot was full of praise for the Brazilian goalkeeper, whose key contributions ensured the team maintained its perfect record.

After being sidelined since October 5 due to a hamstring injury, Alisson finally returned to action. While his replacement, Caoimhin Kelleher, performed admirably during his absence, the first-choice keeper proved his quality with a series of crucial saves before Mohamed Salah’s penalty sealed Liverpool’s victory.

"Alisson certainly didn’t look like someone who’s been out for two months," said Slot.

"I joked with the players that maybe they wanted to test how ready Alisson was, which is why they let him make so many saves. But he showed why I always call him our number one," he added.

Robertson: We Need to Be More in Control Liverpool defender Andy Robertson also praised Alisson's performance but was critical of the team’s tendency to allow too many opportunities for Girona. Alisson made brilliant saves against shots from Alejandro Frances and Miguel Gutiérrez in the first half.

"He’s been out for a while, so maybe we needed to see if he was still sharp, and he certainly was," said Robertson.

"But we need to have more control. We can’t leave so many gaps. We need to press more aggressively and play much better. Especially in the first half, the game was too back-and-forth for our liking," he added.

Slot: Girona Deserves Much More In addition to praising Alisson, Slot also acknowledged Girona's impressive performance, despite the team suffering its fifth loss in six matches.

"I almost feel sorry for Girona. They are such a high-quality team and deserve far more than the three points they’ve accumulated so far," said Slot.

"They had an excellent game plan today, but we had an extraordinary goalkeeper," he concluded.
