Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola does not regret contract extension despite club’s poor form

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has reiterated that he has no regrets about signing a two-year contract extension, even as the club struggles to maintain its form. Since the announcement of his new deal last month, which keeps him at the helm until 2027, City has managed just one win in six games across all competitions.

The reigning Premier League champions currently sit in fifth place with 27 points, nine points behind league leaders Liverpool. A string of underwhelming performances has left the club facing criticism, and their recent elimination from the FA Cup has only added to the frustration. Compounding matters, a 2-0 loss to Juventus has left City in 22nd place in the Champions League standings—a precarious position as only the top 24 teams avoid elimination.

Guardiola, however, remains resolute. Despite admitting that the team’s current form has disrupted his sleep and diet, the Spanish manager emphasized his unwavering commitment to the club.

“Absolutely not,” said Guardiola when asked if he regretted signing the extension. “I would not be able to sleep—even worse than now—if I thought I was leaving when the club is in this situation. Impossible. They might sack me; that could happen. But leaving now, in this position? No chance.”

Having joined Manchester City in 2016 from Bayern Munich, Guardiola has led the Abu Dhabi-owned club to unprecedented success, including 18 major trophies. His legacy was cemented last year when he guided City to a historic Treble, culminating in their first Champions League title.

Despite these achievements, Guardiola’s focus remains on ensuring the team’s sustained success. “What we have done, we have done. The satisfaction of achieving it is there; it is accomplished,” he said. “But in this situation, I could not leave. There are many things we still have to do.”

The 53-year-old acknowledged the volatile nature of football management, adding that he is prepared for the possibility of being replaced if results don’t improve. “Nothing is eternal. You have to be honest. If I am losing and losing and losing, more and more, in the end, I will say, ‘Guys, you have to get someone else to fix this,’” he admitted.

Still, Guardiola expressed gratitude for the faith the club has shown in him during this challenging period. “I don’t know at another big club if you play 10 games and lose seven, whether they would have the confidence in me that City has. But the club knows what we have done in the past and that this situation is exceptional for many reasons,” he said.

As Manchester City looks to rebound from its current slump, Guardiola’s determination to steer the club back to its winning ways underscores his enduring commitment to the project he started nearly a decade ago. The road ahead may be difficult, but Guardiola’s resolve remains unshaken.
