Premier League 2024-25: Salah’s Late Equaliser Secures Liverpool a 2-2 Draw at Arsenal

In an action-packed Premier League match on Sunday, Mohamed Salah’s late goal earned Liverpool a hard-fought 2-2 draw against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. The result kept Liverpool within striking distance of Manchester City at the top of the table, while Arsenal faced another injury setback with Gabriel Magalhaes limping off.

Arsenal took an early lead in the ninth minute, thanks to Bukayo Saka. Latching onto a pinpoint ball from Ben White, Saka cut inside Liverpool’s Andy Robertson and fired past Caoimhin Kelleher at the near post, marking his 50th Premier League goal on his return from injury.

Liverpool responded swiftly, with Virgil van Dijk finding the equaliser nine minutes later. Following a corner, Luis Diaz flicked the ball toward van Dijk, who headed it in to level the score. Van Dijk was lucky to avoid a booking earlier after a reckless kick aimed at Kai Havertz, but his composure on the goal line brought Liverpool back into the game.

Arsenal continued to press and created several chances. Saka fired one over the bar, while Kai Havertz struggled to control Gabriel Martinelli’s cross. The home crowd erupted in calls for a penalty just after the half-hour mark when Ibrahima Konate’s clumsy tackle sent Martinelli sprawling. Referee Anthony Taylor, however, judged that Konate had touched the ball, and Havertz missed the follow-up attempt.

Just before halftime, Mikel Merino put Arsenal back in front, connecting with Declan Rice’s free-kick for a powerful header. The goal stood after a tense VAR review for offside, giving Merino his first Premier League goal for Arsenal.

The second half saw Liverpool regain momentum as they pushed for an equaliser. Luis Diaz threatened five minutes in with a dazzling run along the touchline, and Arsenal’s injury woes continued when Gabriel was forced off, replaced by Jakub Kiwior.

Liverpool kept pressing, leaving Arsenal vulnerable to counterattacks but eventually found their breakthrough in the 81st minute. Darwin Nunez delivered a selfless cross to Salah, who calmly tapped it in, leveling the score and bringing Salah alongside Robbie Fowler with 163 Premier League goals.

Liverpool seemed poised to complete the comeback, but a late Arsenal effort by Havertz was ruled out as the referee had already blown for a foul.

The draw leaves Liverpool in second place with 22 points from nine games, trailing Manchester City by a single point. Arsenal, now with 18 points, sits in third, reflecting a tight race at the top of the table as both teams look to stay within reach of the league leaders.
