R Ashwin on Rishabh Pant: "He Has One of the Best Defenses in World Cricket"
Speaking on his YouTube channel, former cricketer R. Ashwin showered praise on Rishabh Pant, highlighting his flamboyant batting style and potential to excel in Test cricket by balancing his attacking game with a solid defensive technique.
Ashwin believes that if Pant harnesses his abilities effectively, he could become a consistent match-winner. "We need to guide him properly, whether to bat solidly or with intent. Although he hasn’t scored many runs recently, he doesn’t play like someone out of form. Pant still has plenty of time to realise his fullest potential," Ashwin remarked.
A Rare Blend of Flair and Technique
Ashwin emphasized Pant’s vast array of strokes, from the reverse sweep to the slog sweep, acknowledging that while these shots are exhilarating, they come with significant risk. "With his defensive skills, he could score runs in every game if he faces 200 balls. The key lies in finding that balance between aggression and patience. If he masters this middle game, he’ll consistently score centuries," he added.
Pant’s performances in the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) showcased this duality. In Sydney, he scored the second-fastest Test fifty by an Indian (off 29 balls) in the second innings after grinding out a resilient 40 in the first. Ashwin noted that the latter effort, despite being crucial, often goes unnoticed. "Everyone celebrates the second innings but forgets the hard-fought first innings. It’s unfair," Ashwin lamented.
Potential to Break Barriers
Recalling Pant’s heroics during the 2020-21 BGT, where he led India to a historic win in Brisbane—breaking Australia’s fortress—Ashwin acknowledged Pant’s impact as a game-changer. Despite his reputation for extravagant shot-making, Ashwin rates Pant among the best in terms of defensive technique, alongside players like Joe Root and Steve Smith.
"Rishabh Pant rarely gets out while defending. His defense, executed with soft hands, is among the best in the world. In nets, I’ve bowled to him extensively. He doesn’t edge deliveries or get trapped LBW easily. His defensive skills are underrated," Ashwin stated.

Ashwin’s observations underscore the need for a balanced approach in evaluating Pant’s performances. While his attacking exploits grab headlines, it is his defensive prowess that lays the foundation for his innings. "People say he plays too many shots and needs to grind it out in Test cricket. But his defense is his hidden strength," Ashwin reiterated.
Reflecting on his own cricketing journey, Ashwin—who retired from international cricket during the BGT—hinted at future endeavors. "As an India cricketer, my journey is over. But as a cricketer, it’s not the end. I want to document my entire story and share my experiences over time," he concluded.
Ashwin’s insights reveal a deeper understanding of Pant’s game, offering a blueprint for the young wicketkeeper-batter to achieve greatness in the longest format of the game.
