Real Madrid Dominates Espanyol 4-1 in La Liga 2024-25: Vinicius and Mbappe Shine
In a decisive performance, Real Madrid overcame a spirited Espanyol side, securing a 4-1 victory that brought them within a point of La Liga leaders Barcelona. The match saw standout performances from Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappe, with both players making crucial contributions to seal the win.
First Half Struggles
Real Madrid began the game with a different lineup, as coach Carlo Ancelotti chose to rest Vinicius, starting Arda Guler alongside Mbappe and Rodrygo in the attacking trio. Madrid dominated possession during the first half but struggled to break through Espanyol’s resolute defense. Kylian Mbappe, Madrid’s star striker, was heavily involved, looking for his sixth goal of the season. Despite his efforts, including a shot from a tight angle saved by Espanyol’s goalkeeper Joan Garcia, the score remained 0-0 at halftime.
Espanyol's defense proved challenging, with Eder Militao coming close with a header and Jude Bellingham attempting a powerful drive from the edge of the box, only for Garcia to comfortably save it. Frustration mounted for Mbappe, who was even booked for protesting a refereeing decision.

The second half saw Espanyol briefly take control. In the 54th minute, a cross from Jofre Carreras led to an unfortunate own goal by Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, putting the visitors ahead 1-0. This unexpected turn of events jolted Madrid into action, prompting Ancelotti to bring on Vinicius Junior, who had an immediate impact.
Madrid’s Turnaround
Just four minutes after Espanyol’s goal, Dani Carvajal leveled the score for Madrid. Jude Bellingham’s cross caused confusion in Espanyol’s defense, and Carvajal capitalized on a loose ball to score from close range. With the momentum shifting, Madrid ramped up the pressure, and Espanyol's resistance began to falter.
Vinicius, who had come on as a substitute, demonstrated his playmaking abilities with a brilliant cross, using the outside of his boot to set up Rodrygo for Madrid’s second goal. This was followed by another decisive moment when Mbappe unselfishly played Vinicius through on goal, allowing the Brazilian to score Madrid’s third.
Mbappe’s Icing on the Cake
To cap off the victory, Mbappe netted a penalty late in the game, marking his fourth consecutive match with a goal for the club. His composed finish from the spot sealed the 4-1 win and emphasized Madrid's dominance in the second half.
With this victory, Real Madrid not only displayed their attacking prowess but also sent a strong message to their title rivals. Vinicius and Mbappe, in particular, were instrumental in turning the game around, proving their importance to Ancelotti’s squad as they chase La Liga glory.
